When My Laundry is All Out of Sorts, I Get Them All Boxed Up

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

I have been without a household helper for a couple of months now. To be honest, in the beginning, I was afraid of how I was going to be able to juggle my 3 jobs, caring for my daughter and attending to the household chores, single-handedly. It brought me a bit of anxiety because I didn’t just want to get by, I wanted to do well in all of my responsibilities. I may be a single mama, but I knew that if I could just get myself together, I could pull it off. I said to myself, “The key is to be organized!” and so off I went into the process of organizing and automating everything I could so that I could help myself with this whole “helper-less” situation and save as much time as possible. With all that I had to do, every second in my 24 hours need to count.

ZONING IN ON THE GOALS

One of the more intimidating tasks for me was the laundry and the ironing of our clothes. I know you all can relate to how time- consuming it is to attend to the laundry. I never get excited about this particular household chore but I also know that no laundry means my kid and I will have to go butt-naked sooner or later, so this job is TOP PRIORITY.  And like other things that I don’t want to do but I NEED to do, I had to make a schedule and be as efficient in the work as possible. Before anything even gets cleaned, there is of course, the task of sorting out the laundry. There is the separation of the colored from the whites; separating the denim from the towels, the linens, the underwear… the list can go on and on. I knew I needed to tackle this issue first because I didn’t want to spend any more time bent over the laundry basket, sorting stuff until my lower back hurt.  Just separating the clothes can take a good while and because I am only averaging about four and a half hours of sleep a night, I just wasn’t willing to be hassled. This issue had to be dealt with.

EXECUTING AN ACTION PLAN

I wanted to look for linen-lined baskets. I wanted to find pretty ones of course, because to be frank, whenever I pass by the laundry hamper in my room or in my daughter’s room, it really grinds my gears to see the awful sight of the laundry hamper, filled with crumpled up, dirty clothes.  Let’s be honest here, none of us will pass by the laundry hamper and think, “What a lovely sight it is to see soiled clothing!” Right? Right?! The problem with those baskets though, is that if I got a few of them to use to sort laundry, they would take up so much floor space and even though they look pleasant, the dirty clothes would still be in plain view. Briefly, I wondered if there was really something in the market that answered ALL of my requirements.

In search for a solution to my laundry-sorting dilemma, I came across the BRABANTIA STACKABLE LAUNDRY BOX. It wasn’t the dainty-looking basket I had originally envisioned, true, but it looked neat and simple and that was a good thing. In the store, you will find it in its collapsed form, which made me excited because then I know they will be easy to stow away when not in use. It’s easy to unfold and turn into a box, the sides are sturdy and won’t just fold or sink and there is a lined board at the bottom to keep the box standing. The box is lightweight and there are handles on the sides for easy carrying. It also has two access flaps, one on the side and another on the top. And because they are stackable, you can pile them on top of each other and still have access to place the laundry for both the top and bottom boxes. This was beginning to seem like a genius of a product!

Very easy to unfold and fold back. But don’t be fooled, this box is really sturdy although lightweight
There is a sturdy board to line the bottom of the box to keep it stable.
You can open the box from the top or from the side. I personally love that it opens from the side. The clothes slip through easily and I don’t have to see the mess inside!

I took a couple of these babies home to see how they would work out for me.  I like them all in one color tone so that they look neat and so they don’t disturb the aesthetics of my home but if you feel like color coding the boxes for easier sorting, they come in different colors too! And because the boxes are stackable, they only took up a really small space in the house, which is great for me because I don’t have a lot of free space in my small home, to be honest.

EVALUATING THE RESULTS

Over the next couple of weeks, I found that having these stackable boxes were really practical and made my job at sorting the laundry much easier. First, the laundry got sorted according to how I need them to be: whites, colored, delicates and linens. I just had to brief my daughter on which article of clothing went on which box and that was done. I had the laundry sorted out instantly and already, I saved a lot of extra time with just getting rid of that one task. Also, the boxes are very, very durable and can store so much laundry! Seriously, you will be amazed at how much clothes can fit in those boxes. My cat even likes to slip into the side access panel and sleep there with an entire week’s worth of laundry and there was still a lot of extra space. (This is not a joke, I’m serious).

It also addresses the issue of floor space. Because they are stackable, they occupy very minimal floor space and because I have mine lined up against the wall outside of my bathroom, I hardly notice them there. Best of all, (this is the part that really makes the product a winner for me) I don’t see the ugly sight of our dirty laundry. Hooray! I know I seem obsessive about neatness, which I will neither confirm nor deny, but having the boxes stacked and neat looking and effectively concealing the ugliness of the dirty clothes inside while getting my laundry sorted, is just a “take my money” moment for me every time.

Look, I know laundry baskets are not the kind of products that we spend a lot of money on. When I was a kid, my dirty clothes went on an old water pail. I know it’s against our conservative sensibilities to even bother with our “labahan”, much more to spend money on it. But trust me on this one: The Brabantia Stackable Laundry boxes are useful, ergonomic, sturdy, durable and will go well with any home.  This will probably be the last laundry hamper you will own (unless someone steals it because it’s such a treat) and it’s worth the investment.

I’ve always been a fan of this brand and I didn’t even know they made a product line specific to laundry so I was really pleasantly surprised to find that not only did this product answer all my issues about the laundry sorting, it was also so intelligently designed and well-made. I cannot complain. My cat loves it too. He’s cozied up in there right now, as I type this.
